does it stink if you run the washer w/o any clothes in it?
if you take a jug, and fill it with the water that runs into your washing machine, does that stink?
if you undo the cold and hot hose, and take water from each of those, does either, or both, or neither stink?

maybe if you do some more testing, it'll be easier to figure out the answer.

are there any other faucets where the water stinks?
maybe outside?
maybe in your water heater?

if that hasn't shown you anything, try putting just soap, and no clothes in the washer.
then try just running a wash with nothing in it.

if you want a guess, the washer is old, and something in it's hoses, is the problem.

or, there's some dead animal (rat?) that's caught in it that just won't wash out.
