Start with whatever it is you’re testing for. Check with your local health departments and water providers. Most tests are impractical for you to do yourself. Check with these sources and others for references to local water testing laboratories. If you show them you’re serious about a science project, they may gladly help you and even do some testing for you for free.

I buy all mine through mail-order from either Hach or LaMotte. Other places, like Forestry Supplers, carry them too. If you want to walk into a store and buy one, check out a Petsmart. They have some simple ones designed for aquariums.
