Most barrels I've seen either have a fine screen on'em to keep debris out, or the downspout has a screen.  More advanced systems have a separate small pre-tank which fills up first- so the crud off the roof isn't carried into the main tanks.

Great video- very inspiring. Those rubbermaid-style garbage cans are much more affordable than dedicated rain barrels.  Keep up the good work and skate on! :-)</description>
