Heze City Water Pollution Concerns

Last Thursday in Chinas Heze city in Shandong Province millions took to the streets in protest. They say the overall health of the people in the region has taken a big hit thanks to new chemical plants. Heres more.
Locals in Heze city say that at least 60% of the population now suffers from thyroid cancer. The reason four new plants that produce a chemical called cyclohexanone, which is used to make nylon.

Since 2003, four plants were constructed within a 10 square kilometer area. Locals criticize the Hongye Chemical Industry and Fangming Chemical Engineering companies for not building any environmental protection facilities.

The factories have been producing 200 tons of wastewater every day and are allegedly dumping 70 tons of it in a nearby ditch, seriously polluting the groundwater in Dongming County.

Mainland Chinese media reports that at least 600 million people in China do not have access to safe drinking water due to factories polluting local water supplies.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivers her first major foreign policy speech on the eve of her first visit to Asia as a member of the Cabinet.

In her first major foreign policy speech, made on the eve of a four-nation tour of Asia, with visits to Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and China, Secretary Clinton said that the U.S. will resume mid-level military-to-military discussions with China. The talks were suspended by Beijing last year after U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

Hillary Rodham Clinton is the 67th United States Secretary of State, serving in the administration of President Barack Obama. She was a United States Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009. She was a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2008 election.

Philippines Environment Monitor: Water Quality

Poor water quality has large economic and quality of life costs, in terms of health impacts and foregone revenues. According to the Philippine government’s monitoring data, just over 36 percent of the country’s river systems are classified as sources of public water supply and that up to 58 percent of groundwater sampled is contaminated with coliform and needs treatment. Approximately 31 percent of illnesses monitored for a five-year period were also caused by water-borne sources, and many areas are experiencing a shortage of water supply, during the dry season.
