What are current situations our society is facing in terms of keeping sustainability?

I’m doing a research project and I am having trouble finding scientific facts about present situations with our society to maintain a sustainable one. Any good sources or help would be great and appreciated.

One of the issues I listed is the amount of garbage wasted each year

Energy (oil and gas reserves; research; federal grants for students in the field)

Recycling old batteries, paper, glass, plastic pop bottles and aluminum cans.
