Poaching? Let's talk about something more immediate.

Encouraging people to eat low on the food chain would go a long way towards species protection, since so many ecosystems are being destroyed by the livestock and fishing industries.

Cattle Ranching Biggest Driver of Amazon Deforestation (from Greenpeace):

Surely you can measure the amount of beef on a person's plate, and reducing that amount is as achievable as individual choice.

I agree that poaching also need to be addressed, but this involves issues of poverty, economic injustice, ignorance, cultural indifference, greed, and political corruption, all of which are tough to SMARTly quantify.
References :
Poaching is usually related to poverty. It can be combatted by hiring some of the potential poachers to patrol the animals' habitat and shoot or capture the poachers. At the same time, you can foster development to provide jobs that pay well enough to lure poachers into honest work.
References :
Extinction is no threat to species. Almost all of the species that have existed on earth have already gone extinct, and not from any human-related activities. Extinction is a very important part of the development of biodiversity. Extinction allows for niches to be opened up, allowing much more fit species to replace the extinct ones.
