what are the causes and solutions in water pollution?

can you give me some causes and their solutions in water pollution? i need it for my assignment.

causes can be bad air around the area, radioactive rays, or simple things like sewage leaks,
solution is just to steam the water through a purification plant, seeve the water, drain it out, let it pass through different layers of material (forgot the name for it), natures best way to purify is the streams where the water pass over rocks and things which traps the mad and sand

im not sure about the bigger picture, but what i do know is i live by Fareham creek near portsmouth, and if you walk along the promenade you will see a sewage outlet pipe in full view, spewing out its contents into the sea daily, the locals have even started a small campaign against it.
Maybe im naive but i just find it amazing we are still using the sea as a rubbish bin in this day and age.
