How can I test for pollution in water?

I’m doing a project on water quality and the effect of temperature on the quality. I need a way to measure pollution. What kind of pollution can I isolate to test? How can I do this?…What kind of kit will I need to test this?
If possible, can you give me the cheapest way? I can’t spend too much money on this project…Thanks.

Water may have many contaminants, in water and waste water treatment there are many things that scintists, engineers etc.. look at like Hardness (due to calcium and magnesium content), Turbidity (suspended matter), Organic contant, Dissolved gases such as (H2S, CO2 etc..) in addition to coarse material such as wood, pebbles, sand, plastic etc..
an easy and cheap way is to use a pH test to see if the water is acidic or basic using some Digital pH indicator or even a universal pH indicator that can be done in a chemistry laboratory….

good luck

  1. this way only costs around a dollar. get chemicals to test for acid or base
