Heze City Water Pollution Concerns
Last Thursday in Chinas Heze city in Shandong Province millions took to the streets in protest. They say the overall health of the people in the region has taken a big hit thanks to new chemical plants. Heres more.
Locals in Heze city say that at least 60% of the population now suffers from thyroid cancer. The reason four new plants that produce a chemical called cyclohexanone, which is used to make nylon.
Since 2003, four plants were constructed within a 10 square kilometer area. Locals criticize the Hongye Chemical Industry and Fangming Chemical Engineering companies for not building any environmental protection facilities.
The factories have been producing 200 tons of wastewater every day and are allegedly dumping 70 tons of it in a nearby ditch, seriously polluting the groundwater in Dongming County.
Mainland Chinese media reports that at least 600 million people in China do not have access to safe drinking water due to factories polluting local water supplies.
