Can Anybody tell me about rain water conservation at low cost in a house ?

Posted on February 15th, 2010 by admin in water conservation | 6 Comments »

Dear all , I need details for rain water conservation in my house of approx,1000sq feet terrace and 3000sq ft plot area.that has to be at low cost ..

I actually collect rainwater myself. I have two rain boxes right now. They fill up fast. Look at my source links to see where I bought them and also how much you can collect by roof sq footage and inches of rain. I love doing it. I have a raised perimeter garden that I can water for a couple of weeks with the water I collect. The installation is as basic as putting them under your rain gutter. YOu have to cut the down pipe to direct the water but that is it. Take a look on the links I sent for pics. Easiest system I found, plus you can easily expand it.

As soon as I have the money I am going to build a more elaborate system that allows for greater collection. The boxes (75 gallon each) fill up fast. I want to be able to store 1500-3000 gallons at least to really realize savings.

I added a small pump to it to give me pressure to get around my yard with the hose. It will gravity feed but only best when really full. The pump was $90 at Home Depot.

What are some questions you have about water conservation?

Posted on January 30th, 2010 by admin in water conservation | 2 Comments »

I am doing an event on water conservation and wanted to see where the public interest is, what are some questions you have? Concerns? Things you would like to know more about. Thanks

I would pose the following questions

1) How effective is home water conservation and should it be required?
1a) Should municipalities be able to mandate how much green area you have during times of water shortages?
2) How effective is water conservation in restaurants and should it be mandated?
3) In drought prone areas, should farmers be encouraged to grow drought resistant crops in lieu of traditional crops that might otherwise be grown there?
4) Should municipalities install more public drinking fountains thereby discouraging the ue of bottled water, thereby reducing the plastic waste?

I hope this helps. I live in an area of frequent drought conditions and we are very aware of the need for the conservation of water, both for urban and agricultural concerns.

What can teens do to help out with water conservation ?

Posted on January 23rd, 2010 by admin in water conservation | 9 Comments »

What can teens (a group of 10 teens between the ages of 12 - 16)do to help out with water conservation ?

Big things not just turning off the water while brushing your teeth and taking shorter showers.

Also what can we do to spread the word ???

There are many things your group can do, but each depends upon where you live. I live in a semi-rural area, so I can do things like re-direct the output of my family’s clothes washer to water the garden and the lawn. Also, depending how industrious and capable your group is, you could buy a coil of soft copper pipe, connect it to the cold water supply, place the coil in a large barrel which will eventually be filled with the hot water output of someone taking a shower. The cold water in the coil will be somewhat heated up by the hot water from the shower drain, thus requiring less energy to heat the hot water supply that will go to the shower in the future. In retrospect, this is probably beyond the abilities of your group.

What are the best methods of water conservation that would most benefit my school and community?

PLEASE ANSWER A.S.A.P
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

One thing everyone can do is remove lawns and plant drought resistant native plants. Much of water is used to irrigate landscaping.

Just my thoughts

i just saw a tv commercial on a local station about water conservation. do you think this sounds dumb?

Posted on November 15th, 2009 by admin in water conservation | 6 Comments »

they suggested that people stop washing their dogs in order to save water.

ill tell you what. you get all the people where you live to stop using a lot of water and see what happens. the water company will complain that they aren’t making enough money from the water bills and they will ask to raise the water bills. this has happened in other locations allready. same with electricty, you get enough people to cut back on it, and they will also ask to raise their rates so they can continue to pay their stockholders profits.

What is the San Diego City Council and other local Governments doing to help with water conservation efforts?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by admin in water conservation | 2 Comments »

you need to ask the city of san Diego but I know other cities in California are trying to help by putting filters on storm sewers to keep the waterways clean. also by making people aware of how they can help to save water or keep the city clean not pollute our environment.Plus other ways.

Whats a good attention getter for a speech on Water conservation?

Posted on November 9th, 2009 by admin in water conservation | 3 Comments »

Any ideas?

I think any comparison between water usage in the United States and water usage in developing countries would be a great attention getter.

For example: "Each flush of the toilet uses the same amount of water that one person in the Third World uses all day for washing, cleaning, cooking and drinking."

That is 2.5 gallons.

Another great fact: If you run the water while brushing your teeth, you will use 5 gallons. That would be enough water for two people in a developing country for a day.

Hope this helps.

can anyone please find a picture of the water conservation technique by harriet strong??

i really need a picture and some information (if possible, picture is more important) on the water conservation technique by harriet strong..

Here is some information - look at the links below. If you can’t find any pictures, go to your local library and see if they have the books listed within the articles.

In water conservation, chemists spread a thin film of certain inert material over the surface of water to…?

cut down the evaporation rate in reservoirs. This technique was pioneered by Benjamin Franklin three centuries ago. A volume of 0.10 mL of oil could spread over a surface area of 40.25 m^ 2. Assuming that the oil forms a monolayer; that is, a layer of one molecule thick, estimate the length of each oil molecule in nanometers ( 1nm=1×10^-9m)

Please provide steps

From the volume of oil added, you can calculate the thickness since you are given the surface area.
T = V / SA
First convert the volume into cubic meters and then you shouldn’t have any problems.
