Why is Environmental Awareness and Sustainability important for Interior Designers?

Posted on March 9th, 2010 by admin in environmental sustainability | 1 Comment »

And how does it affect them and their designs?

Because those topics are fashionable and interior designers have to be aware of fashion.

Some customers want to follow fashion; some customers would hate to be thought of as following fashion. Either way, the designer needs to know fashion.

Otherwise, it wouldn’t be important at all.

The U.S. and other developed countries went down the wrong path for environmental sustainability. now it is even harder for developing countries to take advice from developed countries because they want the same comfortable instant gratification items that the U.S. has. They call us hipocrites for telling them not to do what we have done. Are there any articles or information sources about this environmental advice conflict?

My journal actually.. in process of publishing still waiting. ah…search for Water research paper….

Ya i understand your situation. Its not to say they dont take advice from developed countries is that no one wants problems or work to be done. Although i very disagree to the attitude they showed which try to escape from problems. Indeed i think all should take heed of other people advices.

how do you say environmental sustainability in french?

Posted on December 31st, 2009 by admin in environmental sustainability | 2 Comments »

As in the context of this sentence

Japan is the leader in environmental sustainability in the world.

Environmental sustainability in the sense that they develop without destroying earth’s resources.

I think it is "la viabilité environnemental" but I don’t think that’s right. =( please help
Thanks

Depending on your context you’d use one of two phrases. Usually you’d use "durabilité environnementale" but it could also be "protection de l’environnement".

are companies realising and utilising this? please respond if you are involved within the industry

All we hear about these days is the use of sustainable materials in construction, I personally don’t see the need because as the government would have you believe the world will end due to global warming so to heck with it. I know this doesn’t answer your question but thought i’d say it anyway. And out of curiosity what area are you involved in?

Can you think an idea to enhance environmental sustainability at a college?

Posted on November 30th, 2009 by admin in environmental sustainability | 1 Comment »

well it depends on whether we are talking about building a new college or just updating an old one.
If you are building a new building then there are all sorts of designs that conserve energy by optimizing heating and cooling, or window placement and insulation. there are also different energy sources you can use like installing solar panels of using geothermal heating.
but if you are talking about making changes to preexisting buildings then you can do simple things like use fluorescent lighting everywhere, install recycling bins next to trash cans, or just put in place policies to restrict wasted energy use like having staff turn off lights and computers.

define environmental sustainability?

Sustainability, in a general sense, is the capacity to maintain a certain process or state indefinitely. In recent years the concept has been applied more specifically to living organisms and systems. As applied to the human community, sustainability has been expressed as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.[1] Given the present level of human numbers, this may be difficult to achieve.[2][3]

The term has its roots in ecology as the ability of an ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future.[4] To be sustainable, nature’s resources must be used at a rate at which they can be replenished naturally. There is now clear scientific evidence from environmental science that humanity is living unsustainably, and that an unprecedented collective effort is needed to keep human use of natural resources within sustainable limits.[5][6]

Sustainability has become a controversial and complex term that is applied in many different ways: to different levels of biological organization (e.g. wetlands, prairies, forests), human organization (e.g. ecovillages, eco-municipalities, sustainable cities) and human activities and disciplines (e.g. sustainable agriculture, sustainable architecture).
