Can you think an idea to enhance environmental sustainability at a college?

Posted on November 30th, 2009 by admin in environmental sustainability | 1 Comment »

well it depends on whether we are talking about building a new college or just updating an old one.
If you are building a new building then there are all sorts of designs that conserve energy by optimizing heating and cooling, or window placement and insulation. there are also different energy sources you can use like installing solar panels of using geothermal heating.
but if you are talking about making changes to preexisting buildings then you can do simple things like use fluorescent lighting everywhere, install recycling bins next to trash cans, or just put in place policies to restrict wasted energy use like having staff turn off lights and computers.

Is environmental studies a good idea?

Posted on November 28th, 2009 by admin in environmental sustainability | 1 Comment »

Either environmental sustainability or protection?
Is there good money in this, and good career options?

No. Generally "Environmental Studies" is regarded as close to tree hugging. Suspect, unprofessional.

Environment Sustainability Issue?

Posted on November 25th, 2009 by admin in sustainability issues | 3 Comments »

Extinction is a huge threat to many species, and this is often due to poaching. For science class I have to think of a creative and smart solution to this problem. Any help?
The solution must be
S pecific
M easurable
A chievable
R elevant
T imely

Poaching? Let’s talk about something more immediate.

Encouraging people to eat low on the food chain would go a long way towards species protection, since so many ecosystems are being destroyed by the livestock and fishing industries.

Cattle Ranching Biggest Driver of Amazon Deforestation (from Greenpeace):

Surely you can measure the amount of beef on a person’s plate, and reducing that amount is as achievable as individual choice.

I agree that poaching also need to be addressed, but this involves issues of poverty, economic injustice, ignorance, cultural indifference, greed, and political corruption, all of which are tough to SMARTly quantify.

Why is sustainability the fastest growing movement on the college campuses?

Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Thanks Chinabli, sometimes we forget our children are our greatest resource

Tuition costs are getting out of reach.

I met a guy from Bulgaria. Anyone, at anytime can go to college for free, with the exception of books and living expenses.

Education is the backbone and future of any country. I wish we were not so partisan because we have lost sight of that very simple analogy. Education is the future, not fighting wars, and certainly not holding people back for lack of education.

When I went to college, the tuition was almost non existent. Now for many, it is simply out of reach.

It is time to reverse that policy.

how much water should i drink if im trying to get rid of water retention by tomorrow afternoon?

Posted on November 25th, 2009 by admin in water | 4 Comments »

Got water retention from easter, but tomorrow at 4:30 i have a psychiatrist appointment and want to be my normal weight if possible, not bloated with like 6 pounds of water retention.

Last night i drank 4 cups of water. This morning i drank another 4, and plan to drink 12 more over the course of today. Im also exercising 1 hour this morning and 1 hour tomorrow morning. Any other tips?

You really shouldn’t be drinking extra water to get rid of water retention. Instead, you should be taking a diuretic. My husband has had them prescribed for him before for water retention but the doc told us, and from experience you should be drinking coffee. It works great. Coffee will dry up retained water and it is the diuretic that will make you potty out the excess water so it does a double job. With as much water as you drank you should probably drink around 2-3 cups somewhere throughout the day. Remember this is not a good idea in a different situation like on hot days or if your leaning toward dehydration.

What is the difference between distilled water and BOILED water?

Posted on November 23rd, 2009 by admin in water | 6 Comments »

I’ve found enough information between the differences of distilled and spring water, but not between distilled and boiled water. Im wondering if there’s a difference between using either distilled or boiled water for mixing formula for my newborn. A lot of the answers here talk about not using distilled, but to use spring water, or crib water, etc… However im referring to the instructions on the formula tin, saying to use boiled water. thanks in advance!

Distilled water is boiled long enough to turn it into steam. The steam vapor is cooled and the remaining water is recovered. All chemicals, heavy metals, etc escape with the remaining steam. All that is left is pure water.

Spring water is water that has been drawn from either melted snow or streams. It is chemically treated to sanitize it.

Boiled water is usually tap water that has been boiled for at least 15 minutes to sterilize it. It still contains chemicals and heavy metals, etc. But bacteria has been removed.

What causes such changes in water quality in a salt water reef tank?

Posted on November 21st, 2009 by admin in water quality | 1 Comment »

Especially in a ten gallon tank. I’m a veteran in fresh water fish tanks. I would like to have a ten gallon reef tank only and would greatly appreciate any additional infomation.

you should do %25 water changes every 3 days to maintain water quality in that small tank.

What is the Canadian Government doing to protect its lakes/rivers and oceans from water pollution?

Posted on November 21st, 2009 by admin in pollution water | 1 Comment »

I have the Action Plan for Clean Water already from the Environmental Canada website. Can anyone give me more information about what they are doing? I’m writing an essay about water pollution.

Also, what other factors do industries have to not get rid of chemicals properly other than the cost?
Thank you : )

How much water for my garden?

Posted on November 21st, 2009 by admin in water | 2 Comments »

I always water my garden around 5 in the afternoon. It’s summer time and soils are really dry that they crack. How much water should I leave? I have red palms, palm tree, cactus and others.. I only stop watering when I see initial flooding.. since soil absorbs them, within minutes it’s all gone. But is it enough to last them the next day? Does the planting matter, like if the roots were planted really deep so they need more watering for the liquid to reach them?

A garden should always be watered in the morning if possible. Early evening like your 5:00 is all right just not close to evening. Night water tends to produce fungus and blight. The average garden needs one inch of water two times a week. This is a measurable one inch. Intermittent watering in times of extreme heat and drought is good but the minimum requirement is 1 measurable inch 2x a week.

What is a good project idea on water quality?

Posted on November 19th, 2009 by admin in water quality | 1 Comment »

We are to make a project of some significance to water quality, in which we have to describe the cause and effects of the issue. We must also have a topic that allows students to do something to fix/resolve this issue. Any good ideas people? Best idea gets 5stars!
It is a research project, not an experiment.

If you have public areas that are used for swimming, you could create testing for presence of E. coli. This information could be tracked and anaylzed; What is it? when does it appear? how long does it take for levels to become acceptable? Further, you could expand your project to include other types of simming ailments (swimmer’s itch; ear infections; etc).
